A very important battle was fought here. While it didn't involve a lot of deaths it did create a lot of controversy and led to changes in the treatment of prisoners of war. Steep bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River made this area a strategic location during the Civil War. The Confederate Army built extensive fortifications here, but it was under Union control for most of the war. Nathan Bedford Forrest recaptured the fort in 1864.
